I just had this delivered today. I honestly put it together with ease. It took about 45 mins. I was very hesitant because of some of the reviews but all the parts were there and nothing came damaged. Every hole lined up perfectly for me. It looks gorgeous. I can’t say whether it will hold up or not but so far it seems pretty sturdy.

Was basically expecting a much flimsier and cheaper-made shoe rack but this one it definitely well made – Admittedly better than I expected. Looks great and is surprisingly sturdy. I weigh 230lb and I sit on it just fine.

I wanted a shoe bench with ventilated shoe shelves, coat hooks and a shelf for hats. The only thing this is missing is padding for the seat but I can live with that. I’m not even deducting a star for the padding since I knew it didn’t have that. The star deduction is because the hooks aren’t welded straight (as in perfectly vertical) on their backing plates. Every single hook is slightly crooked. Not so crooked that coats will fall off but if you have OCD, this may drive you a little crazy. At first, I thought I *was* crazy after screwing in the first 2 hooks and everything was a little cockeyed.
Also, if you aren’t detail-oriented, do yourself a favor and hire someone or ask a detail-oriented friend to assemble it for you. Every person who said that they split the wood (the seat and the hat shelf) used the wrong sized bolt. 4 bolts are just a few millimeters shorter than the other 16, otherwise identical, bolts. If you use the longer bolts in the wood, it will come out the top side. It’s even more confusing because the shorter bolts will hold the frame together just fine so you don’t realize you’ve used the wrong bolts on the frame. Ask me how I know. Many, many thanks to the other reviewer who pointed this out. I have an electric screwdriver so it took about 30 minutes to assemble by myself, including fixing my bolt mistake. My husband was available to help but I didn’t need it.
Except for the crooked coat hooks, everything is machined well and there aren’t any defects in the finish. The wood is a decent density, not lightweight particle board. We’re nomadic and I’ve already determined that we can just unbolt the top half from the bottom half to make moving it easier. I’m not worried about it being less structurally sound if we have to do that multiple times (unlike some Ikea furniture which can’t be disassembled without making it wobbly when reassembled).
The unit is very sturdy. It sits on hard flooring and once the adjustable feet are set properly, the bench is rock solid. The top still sways a little bit, but that’s the nature of the beast with something so tall with only 2 vertical supports. It comes with wall anchors and if you have little ones (or monkeys), make sure you use them.
Be aware if you have ankle-high shoes or high-heels, depending on their height, you may only be able to fit one pair. They’ll pretty much only fit on the top shoe shelf in the middle. The bottom shelf is slightly shorter/shallower and the top shelf has a decorative (not removable) wire that curves down on the sides and reduces the usable space if you want to slide shoes straight in. Otherwise, you could slide them into the middle and then move them right or left behind the wire. Standard sneakers won’t have this problem.
[Now that I think about it, if you really need all the available space, you could reverse the seat so the decorative part was in the back and out of the way. I believe the holes should still line up. Attractiveness -1; functionality +1.]
