My dermatologist has long recommended a 10% benzoyl peroxide wash. It used to be Rx only, but eventually became available OTC. I’ve used a 10% bp wash for many years.
I’m in my 40s, have oily skin, and left untreated can develop acne ranging from small white heads to painful, cystic acne and folliculitis. It took me 20 years of adult life to eventually find a daily routine that generally keeps my skin clean, clear, and free of painful breakouts. The cornerstone of that routine was the Neutrogena 10% Benzoyl Peroxide wash that I found to be strong enough to serve it’s purpose but still gentle enough to not cause annoying side effects such as irritation and over dryness. Unfortunately that face wash appears to have been discontinued.
PanOxyl was a product I had tried before, years ago (before I discovered the other parts of my routine which I suspect played a bigger role in it actually being effective – more on that below), and I believe it was the actual brand recommended by my dermatologist once 10% bp became available over the counter. So I knew it was a good product, and similar to what I had been using- both in price and effectiveness. So it was an easy first choice for me in trying to replace the wash I’ve relied on for some time.
I’ve been using it now for a few weeks and I haven’t noticed a difference in my results, thankfully. It seems to be very similar to me and hasn’t dried my skin out completely or irritated it in any way. So for now, I think this is the one that will become my go-to. I’ve also purchased it for my 18-year old who was similarly concerned about the Neutrogena being discontinued. Seems to be working for them as well.
I mentioned above that for me, there were other factors that helped make this product work better. Those factors are:
*Exfoliating/washing before I shave – without doing this, shaving dirty and oily skin seems to lead to more breakouts.
*I use a little silicone face scrubber to apply and scrub with the PanOxyl – after shaving -which helps clean follicles and wash away little hairs- it seems to really help avoid ingrown hairs and folliculitis, which has been awful for me at times.
As I mentioned, I have found a routine that works for me- so for anyone looking for help developing their own routine to treat acne, in general, some info about me and my routine is as follows:
Male, 44 years old
Full beard
Bald (I shave my head and around my beard approx 2-3 times per week).
Shaving Days (all in shower):
1. Wash face, head, and skin under beard with an exfoliating face wash (there is a Viking Revolution micro dermabrasion wash I like for this purpose, but there are a lot of products meant for pre shave wash).
2. I shave using a concentrated shave cream (Cremo is what I like the most).
3. I apply a nickel sized amount of PanOxyl to a silicone face scrubber, rub it around to cover it, and then gently scrub/massage it into my skin- head, neck, face, etc. in small circular motions. If I have any acne starting to form, I might seperately apply a little additional face wash to that area and scrub a little extra as well.
4. Importantly, I take the time to rinse well, as the Benzoyl Peroxide can stain towels or clothes if it’s not appropriately rinsed.
5. I wash my beard with a beard wash.
6. I generally do not moisturize over the winter unless I start to feel dry- but everyone is different. When showering twice a day if working out, etc, I will use a mild moisturizer, but generally my skin is best balanced at this point without. When the weather is nice enough to be outside, I use a daily moisturizer for sensitive skin with sunscreen in it. If I’m going to be in the sun for extended periods, I’ll also apply higher spf sunscreen. I like Neutrogena triple protect for men as the daily.
7. I see a dermatologist, and I have two prescription creams I use in tiny amounts for any flare ups. It’s pretty rare that I have to use them, and it’s usually if I am lax with my routine at all. One cream for morning and one for night. Epiduo Forte and Aczone.
8. Non-shaving days I use a similar amount either in my fingers or with the scrubber to wash my face, head, neck, etc. And that’s the only product I use.
If this helps anyone in any way, then it was worth putting it out there. Bottom line, this PanOxyl wash works well for me as part of my routine. I added the above context because skin types vary greatly, and it took me a lot of trial, error, research, help from a dermatologist, and persistence to finally get my acne in check. I used to think I could just use a benzoyl peroxide face wash once a day and that would be enough. For some people, maybe it is- but for me personally, I have to do a few other things to maximize it’s effectiveness.

I’ve had this product for the past couple months, and I would recommend to wash to this a minimal on the face as it does dry the skin very easily due to the benzoyl peroxide. I have oily-sensitive skin by the way. It’s been treating my body acne pretty well though! Noticing the changes and fading of my acne. Does have a weird smell but it’s tolerable.
Tips to using this product:
-Just be sure to not overuse and use a small amount. Will have the chances of causing the skin to be a bit more sensitive (turn red, or stinging), if you switch from another product to this.
-Have a moisturizer/body lotion to lock in the moisture of the skin so it will not dry out. I use gel moisturizers as they do work well for my skin type (as I mentioned above).
Sorry if this is such as long review, but the longer you use and the more feedback/review you can give to other people who are looking into this face/body wash!

I get tiny pimples on the side of my nasal fold. I googled how to get rid of this and a few people mentioned this product. I’ve only used this stuff for about 4 days now , but it has shrunken and almost completely rid of the pimples . This stuff is pretty strong and definitely drying on the skin , so if you have sensitive skin be easy with it. Keep this far away from your eyes. I have some shaving acne on my traps and shoulders , will give this a try for it

First, the cons- if you are using this to treat scalp acne, which most people probably are not. This cleanser has a thick, chalky consistency, and I ended up using a lot more than anticipated. The smell is not pleasant, however it does not linger. This cleanser also does not really foam up.
The pros: I have had problems with my scalp since moving from the West Coast to the Midwest. After about a week of living here, I lost a huge patch of hair about the size of my palm. This eventually grew back- as did other smaller bare patches- but the hair in these areas will not grow beyond 1/2″. It’s ben like this for years. Weird.
And- I have had an ongoing case of getting these weird little painful nodules on my scalp that I think are pimples, but they feel more like acne cysts. (Sorry this is so visceral, but maybe this description and review will help someone with the same condition.). I’ve seen several doctors regarding this condition, and they have taken samples of skin and hair root and ruled out parasites, it isn’t an infection, etc. After all of the tests, the doctors did not HAVE a diagnosis. They treated my scalp with cortisone injections, but those didn’t help.
It’s just been something I’ve had to live with. Along with the painful scalp zit things, there is a constant layer of something that builds up on my scalp that feels like fine sand. It doesn’t itch, it’s just annoying. Is it overgrowth of cells? The doctors had no answer for this, either.
I’ve tried anti-fungal shampoos. I’ve tried any and all dandruff shampoos. I’ve tried salt and sugar scalp scrubs. I even tried Hibiclens. My scalp will stay mostly free of the sandy layer for as long as it is wet after being cleansed. Then the build-up returns, and soon, the painful raised cyst things.
If I wash my hair every day, that doesn’t help, either.
I read in the reviews for this product that some people had used PanOxyl on their scalps to treat scalp acne, so I ordered it. After ONE USE of this product- one use- I noticed a major change. A raised painful cyst near the top of my head had nearly vanished after the one wash. A few cysts in another area were just starting to show up, but after I washed with the PanOxyl, they disappeared. The sandy layer was greatly lessened.
In short- this product works on scalp acne! After all of the medicated shampoos the doctors recommended and the many many dollars wasted on drugstore dandruff shampoos- this is the one product that has really made a difference. The only thing is is that it is very thick, so I ended up using more than I had hoped to, and it didn’t foam up, but that was really ok. It’s not shampoo- I just need to learn how to use it more efficiently.
To use it, I wet my scalp under the sink, and rubbed the PanOxyl onto the affected areas, and then let it sit for as long as I could- about seven to eight minutes. After I rinsed it out, I could tell it had made a huge difference in my scalp condition. One thing: if you are using this as a scalp treatment, be sure to have a good conditioner to follow up with. I tried to keep the PanOxyl on my scalp only as I guessed it would be drying to hair, and it really is. After conditioning my ends, my hair was fine. My scalp felt refreshed and much better than prior to using this product. Again the “sandy” layer is much lessened after the PanOxyl, so that condition has improved as well.
I washed my scalp with the PanOxyl yesterday, and again today. I’ve used almost half of the tube, so I’m hoping I will only need to use it twice a week or so as a maintenance product. Or maybe I’m just inadvertently using too much. Regardless- I am DELIGHTED that other Amazon shoppers recommended its use for scalp acne (thanks, guys!) as I would have continued wasting a lot of money trying to find something that worked. If you have painful scalp acne, buy this and use it. You will be so glad that you did!
