   The laptop is great – looks, feels & functions like brand new, but it is a refurb. It comes in a refurb box, not a Microsoft box. I got the 4-yr. warranty with it, and even with that is was one-third the cost of a brand new one. I love the laptop and I would buy it again, but the seller/listing should not claim that the laptop is new.

   Decent device overall BUT The display has blur and shut downs, also part of the screen is not responsive to touch after only 4 months of use.

   Okay, so I had a MacBook for about 7 years prior to purchasing this. I primarily bought it because my new job requires extensive use of excel and compatibility with Mac and any Microsoft office product is not as good as Windows.

   So far: it seems like an update is required every few days. I would run into bugs (screen wouldn’t brighten or dim) and then have to update, etc, etc. The excel I’m running doesn’t seem any faster than it was on my Mac. Something new it started doing the past two weeks, the screen flickers to black screen and flickers right back. It will do it when switching between different windows I have pulled up. I could go on and on with other small things but I guess I can summarize by saying for the price of a Mac and with the quality I am not getting, I wish I would have just purchased another Mac. I really wanted to love this computer but can’t say I have.

   Out of the box the device worked alright, however, I realized that key “J” gets stuck, which makes the device effectively unusable. Returning this one, but will buy another one, hoping it will be fully functional.
   (Jun 2021 update)
   I’ve got a replacement, and it worked alright for about 7 months. Today, one of the batteries died, and the device became effectively unusable. It took me about 1 hour to figure out how to contact a human from Microsoft support, then another 30 minutes to get through. Long story short: they emailed me a mailing label, and I will have to pay $20 for expedited shipping. Microsoft will send me a used device in return.
   So… Reducing rating down to 2 stars.

   I purchased the 13.5″ i5 256 GB. I’ve had it for around 3 weeks now, and it works great! As a student, it’s great to have the touch screen for annotating documents and handwriting notes. I also use it for gaming and it runs smoothly for games such as League of Legends or Valorant. The only problems that i have run into so far has to do with how hot the SB3 gets. But as long as you’re not running too many apps at once or playing heavier games, it should be fine. Overall, great laptop!

   Received 3 days early, just on time for the weekend (props to Purolator). Unboxed on a breezy friday night…anticipation turns to disappointment – Surface Book 3 is D.O.A. Jump through microsoft helpline hoops and tech. support confirms hardware failure – here is yur’ ticket # for Amazon, send it back immediately. Excellent Amazon customer service rep talked me through everything again, did all he could to make it right and initiated the return process. Good man he was. While waiting on hold, reviewed the very extensive troubleshooting guide on microsoft.com. One small blurb, almost a caption, was a suggestion to clean the copper leads on the brand new “hot end” of the charger (where the white light is) with rubbing alcohol. I prefer DI water but whatever’. Careful blast of clean, compressed air in the female port and gentle cleaning of magcharger contacts and I have a fully functional, really quite cool MSB3. Thank you Microsoft CSR. Thank you top tier Amazon customer service…return cancelled…reason-PEBKAC. P.S. Politeness and respect go a long way, and it cost 0.

   I have had problems with this PC for days after owning it. From blue screen shutdowns to loosing the microphone and speaker functions. And now I cannot login using my organizational details. I can’t contact support with the PC. I can’t run outlook nor can I login to any MS software including the store. The one time support tried to get back to me, I was kept on hold till the line cut! And I cannot even use the Microsoft mouse either!!

    This review is specific to the i5 equivalent. Before I get to the negatives, I will touch on the positives, because they are the reasons I’ve decided to hold onto the machine. Would I buy it again? Hell no. But the positives make it livable, though arguably that’s not the best spot to be in with a new machine.
    + Tablet mode: Fantastic implementation. After about 50 days of use, I’ve only run into 1 (albeit major, as the display drained power to the keyboard and started running at 0.19Ghz) bug related to undocking and docking the screen.
    + Keyboard: Haven’t had one this nice to type on since my old MSI machine.
    + Windows Hello: Love to see it.
    + Cameras: 1080p webcam, and a front cam that’s been useful for picture-in-picture outputs to Zoom
    + Display: On-par with my iPad Pro in terms of color representation. However…

    Negatives:
    – Display: The display is capable of running at 3000×2000, however the machine struggles to output this during even basic use, meaning that you will likely be using this Surface at 1692×1128, which is livable but noticeably blurry on this panel.
    – Speakers: Incredibly quiet. Even at maximum volume, some videos are impossible to hear if any background noise is present, which is in sharp contrast to the aforementioned iPad and its sound output.
    – Value: Speaking of the iPad, it’s an important comparison. Right now, you can pay about 800 for a Surface Laptop 4, or 300-400 more for the older Surface Book 3, but with the added bonus of having a tablet mode. However, the performance downgrade and struggles makes me question if just getting a Laptop 4 w/ double the RAM + iPad Mini or regular iPad would be a more efficient use of money. We’re talking about the Book 3 struggling with 1080p video on YouTube without frame drops, yet a cheap iPad wouldn’t question that for a second. It seems like the best of both worlds, while the Book 3 seems to offer the mediocre of both.

    Much of the negatives didn’t truly sink in until after the return period, so I may recommend purchasing through Microsoft directly, as they offer 60 days to make up your mind rather than 30. The quality of the product’s build is undeniable, but the *hardware* is sacrificed for features. It’s up to you to decide how important those features are to you.
